Why Give Things When You Can Give Experiences...

Updated: Jan 13, 2019

In a world already drowning in plastic, my 2019 mantra is to give the people I love the gift of time and experience. Things they can still keep forever, but in their hearts, memories, and perhaps the odd photo book. The gift of experience is one without unnecessary plastic, so much of which ends up in our precious oceans.

Many studies have shown that material possessions do not equal happiness and that experiences are much more intrinsically fulfilling than things. Isn’t that fascinating?

One of my best friends is a recent first time Mum, so for her Christmas present I decided to throw her a surprise boho picnic (pictured above). This came complete with sunshine, laughter and girly banter. Just what anyone needs to let go of the mental clutter!

Here are some more handy tips to reduce waste this year:

+ Upcycle gifts from an op shop, or give gifts of fresh produce.

+ Make someone a smile jar gift and fill it with little handwritten notes about special memories you've shared or inspirational quotes.

+ Make a point of removing wasteful packaging and either leave it at the store or dispose of it carefully and mindfully.

+ Purchase an experience for someone, such as a meal out or tickets to an outdoor cinema. Ensure the voucher is an e-voucher too, rather than opting for a printed or plastic version.

+ Simply enjoy time with your friends and family. Time is the one thing you spend that actually makes you richer! Make time your currency in 2019.
